Sammanfattning

The written history of the Jewish community of Szeged dates back to 1785, and it was through the rabbis, industrialists, teachers, scientists and artists of the time that Szeged became one of the most important economic and cultural centres of rural Hungary in the early 20th century. The archives of the Szeged jewish community preserve official and private documents from a period of almost 200 years, and texts and other objects are also part of the collection. As their fate is closely linked to that of their community, the collection bears the traces and consequences of all the historical events that the local Jewish community has lived through. For information on the scope of the archive’s collections, please consult the catalogue of holdings, which can be found on the institution’s website (szegedjewisharchives.org). From 2017 to 2020, the collection material up to 1970 has been arranged according to the archival standards and is currently undergoing key selection. The staff of our archives are constantly publishing, giving lectures and organising events with the aim of stopping the forgetting. The archives are an indispensable resource for academics, for higher education and genealogists. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive presentation of the Szeged jewish community archives.
