Abstract
Materials research at the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University in Turku enjoys wide acclaim. On various occasions the Ministry of Education, The Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of the Interior have commended the excellence of the work. Evaluation units of the Academy of Finland, the Technology Development Centre (TEKES) and the Competence Centre, as well as an outside committee of experts, have remarked on the leading position in basic research, applied research and networking with industry. Moreover, the graduate School of Materials Research, based at the universities in Turku and funded by the Ministry of Education and the Academy of Finland, runs the most broadly ranging Graduate School programme in Finland.
