Who becomes self-employed and who quits self-employment?

What causes an individual to quit his or her wage or salary job to become self-employed? How can we explain why some individuals are self-employed and not employees? What kind of option is self-employment for the unemployed? This article is about the determinants of self employment in Finland. The results point to the fact. that most self-employed are not succesful entrepreneurs who rapidly increase their wealth. The results instead indicate that self-employment for many is a substitute for unemployment, because entry to the regular wage or salary labour market is restricted for some reason.
