Sammanfattning
Food packaging prolongs shelf life of food by providing protection, and acts as a source of product information. To fulfill these purposes the packaging materials and converting equipment must work properly to ensure good quality of food packaging. The Packer 2020 project aims at investigating the current status and future trends in organic and local food packaging, developing a new converting unit for forming paperboard based packages, and creating novel packaging materials and indicator solutions.18 actors from four local and organic food chains (fish, meat, berries, and mushrooms) in Southern Finland were interviewed in a baseline study. An ideal local and organic food package is made of renewable materials and it has ecological characteristics, such as recyclability or compostability. It is of proper size, and there is the possibility to vary the size according to the food product.By utilizing a servo-electric system, the force production of converting equipment was found to be more adjustable, accurate and cost efficient compared to hydraulic force production. The servo-electric approach can thereby be recommended for applications with high accuracy and force requirements.Novel breathable dispersion barrier coatings with a high bio-based polymer content were developed. The print quality on these coatings was good in varying environmental conditions. The results indicate that these novel solutions could be viable options to be used in packaging of a variety of food products. Copper acetate and copper sulfide based sensing films were developed for the electrical and optical detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and total volatile basic-nitrogen (TVB-N), respectively. Indicators were produced by inkjet printing on polyethylene terephthalate and paper substrates. The sensors were found to have from five to over six magnitude changes in resistance when exposed to the gases while the indicators were also found to have a significant change in color.
