N2 - Statecharts is a design notation to model reactive systems that is part of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and it is commonly used in the automotive and telecommunication software industry. In this paper we present a study of how the use of some statechart features correlate to the number of pre-release defects in the maintenance of large systems. We discuss possible causes for these correlations and provide some advice to both UML practitioners and to designers of new visual design languages.
