Sammanfattning
This analysis explores how Turkey has become the EU’s primary waste dumping ground, exposing the environmental and humanitarian consequences of Europe’s reliance on waste exports. Despite sustainability commitments, 35.1 million tonnes of waste were shipped to non-EU countries in 2023, with Turkey bearing the brunt due to weak regulations and economic vulnerabilities. Illegal dumping, toxic pollution, and child labor in informal recycling sectors exacerbate the crisis. Regulatory loopholes and Turkey’s lack of oversight fuel this growing catastrophe. Addressing it requires stricter EU export controls, enhanced Turkish waste governance, and a shift toward genuine circular economy practices within Europe.
