Corrosivity of lead chloride containing salt mixtures

    The presence and behaviour of heavy metal compounds in different parts of a circulating fluidized bed boiler burning recovered fuel have been previously determined with full-scale measurements and chemical modelling. Based on the results, lead was present as chlorides in different concentrations at all studied locations in the boiler. Boiler parts where lead chlorides are able to condense, have been identified. It is known that lead chloride increases corrosion risk when condensing on metal surfaces.In this work, the corrosivity of lead chloride with respect to material surface temperature was studied. The aim of this work was to identify a threshold temperature of lead chloride induced corrosion for practical applications. Another objective of this work was to determine whether the amount of lead chloride in the salt mixture has an effect on corrosivity. The laboratory scale corrosion tests were carried out in an isothermal tube oven in air. The salt mixtures of lead chloride with different amounts of potassium sulphate were used as synthetic deposits. Low alloy commercial boiler steels were used as test materials.
