Biografi
I received my BA and MA degrees (major in English, minors in French and pedagogical studies) from the University of Turku, and as part of my Master's Studies I went on an exchange to Dublin, Ireland, and studied at the English department of Trinity College Dublin. That is where I first read the author I have studied in my PhD, Maria Edgeworth.
Forskningsintressen
My doctoral thesis is titled "Exploring 'what is called the world': Aspects of Worldliness in Maria Edgeworth's Fiction". Using a contextualising method of interpretation, I explore different aspects related to Edgeworth's negative representation of the "world" understood as a sphere of aristocratic sociability. While existing criticism attributes this to for example the theory of the domestic woman or a preference for privacy, this thesis aims for a broader contextualization and historicization of the phenomenon and explores other currents of intellectual history that influenced Edgeworth's treatment of the "world". These include what I would call Edgeworth's own philosophy of happiness and her political philosophy, which can be identified as patriotism or country ideology.
More broadly, I have research interests in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century writing by women, especially concerning representations of sociability, fashionable society, political economy, and moral philosophy in imaginative literature. I have recently finished an article manuscript on Edgeworth's relationship to political economy.
Undervisning
I have versatile teaching experience spanning both secondary and tertiary education. I have taught academic writing and survey modules in English literature to both first- and second-year students. I have taught texts from all periods of English-language literary history, including British, US, and postcolonial literature. During my PhD, I completed some modules and essays on teaching in higher education, digital tools in teaching, as well as thesis supervision. I have supervised four BA theses (on e.g. African American and Victorian fiction) to completion.
