Providing teacher students with differentiation and affordances with meaningful assignment types role models the types of assignments and affordances they can provide for their students and pupils. The following study outlines an action research study on podcasts as an oral assignment type to foster close reading of course materials, working in teacher teams, creating micro-lectures using academic sources to promote the Finnish ideal of research teachers or teacher researchers, increasing language proficiency and using academic registers, vocabulary and referencing orally, practising orchestrating panel discussions and organisation of learning materials. This didactic assignment design closely mimics the classroom and teaching environment. The assessment system for the assignment was cumulative, formative and summative in a novel mix described as sticker and progress pedagogy. The podcasts were handed in and partially created with the LMS Showbie, allowing for teacher feedback in audio or video format and providing meaningful formative feedback paths. Tests were carried out in five different classes comprising a total number of 79 teacher-students at a Finnish University. Results include higher retention of course content, better quality close reading, increased fluency in the target language, better use of source references, increased group bonding, quality assurance of learning, better teacher knowledge of student progress and understanding, increased differentiation, and accessibility. New assignment types in teacher education created around the concept of meaningful learning, involving the use of technology, allowing for more accessibility and inclusion, and improving social relationships between students, may increase the quality of teaching and research for the future teachers taking part. The indications of improvements in academic language use and mechanics with this type of assignment are promising.Period | 26 apr. 2023 |
