Teachers’ encounters with the linguistic and semiotic landscapes of language immersion preschools

The aim of this paper is thus to examine language immersion teachers’ reflections on linguistic and semiotic landscapes. The context for our study is language immersion preschools in Finland. Two research questions guide our study:
1) What goals, functions and practices for language(s) do teachers identify?
2) How are these connected to the physical learning environment?

This study aims to increase the understanding of the linguistic and semiotic landscapes in educational contexts prior to basic education, combined to the context of language immersion. The linguistic and semiotic landscape is an important part of the physical learning environment in language immersion preschools supporting the children´s bilingual development and early literacy.

The study is conducted using so called walking interviews where the participants, in the current study language immersion preschool teachers, guide the researcher through the learning environment presenting their view on the linguistic and semiotic landscape.
