Beskrivning

Sloyd has been an integral part of the Finnish education system since its inception by Uno Cygnaeus in 1866. This educational approach emphasizes hands-on learning, creativity, and the development of both practical and transversal skills through the making of artefacts in various materials. From kindergarten to PhD, Sloyd education in Finland is designed to foster holistic development, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. In early childhood education, Sloyd introduces young learners to basic crafting materials and techniques, promoting motor skills, and finding the joy in material creativity. As students progress to primary and secondary education, the curriculum evolves to include more complex projects, new materials and techniques and integrating both textile and technical crafts. The 2014 national curriculum reform, which introduced a multi-material approach to the subject, has further enriched Sloyd education by encouraging interdisciplinary learning and innovation. At the higher education level, vocational schools and universities offer specialized training and research opportunities in Sloyd, preparing students for careers in education, design, and related fields. Recent research highlights the importance of sustainability, holistic education, and the evolving role of Sloyd in contemporary society. This comprehensive educational journey underscores the cultural and individual significance of Sloyd in Finland, contributing to the development of skilled, creative, and adaptable individuals.
