Beskrivning
Russian-speakers constitute the second largest language minority in Finland after Swedish-speaking Finns. This minority includes people of diverse background, coming from various predominantly post-Soviet republics, and with diverse socio-economic statuses. The reasons for their coming to Finland also vary significantly. This minority potentially includes both those consider Russian as their mother tongue and those who utilize Russian it in their everyday life, though to various extent, in order to get access to information, services and goods circulating among the Russian-speakers in Finland.Like Finnish society in general, the Russian-speakers have been significantly influenced by various recent crises and changes, to name few - COVID 19 pandemics, Russia’s war on Ukraine, right parties’ ascendance in Finland and their plans for austerity, change of migration and labor law. Yet, little is known about how these events have particularly influenced the lives of the Russian-speaking residents of Finland, and what are their actual implications if any. In order to discuss this subject, we arrange a seminar and welcome scholars and the third sector representatives to participate in the knowledge exchange.
We aim to bring together researchers working with the themes of integration and living arrangements of immigrants in Finland, and practical specialists who plan, arrange, and preform integration and support to the foreign-background residents of Finland. We would like these actors to share their knowledge and collaboratively (re)produce more nuanced understanding or insight on what is happening in Finland nowadays. We believe this will facilitate their future collaboration and networking, as well as will benefit Finnish society in general and its particular language and national minorities.
