Linguistically Sensitive Teaching in All Classrooms (LISTiac): European Education Through Research-Based Policies

Beskrivning

Students in the European education system face increasingly diverse linguistic backgrounds as a result of societal diversification in the last decades. Accordingly, it is assumed that EU teachers need to be linguistically sensitive and responsive towards students’ whole linguistic repertoires. Moreover, since languages are present in all the subjects in the curriculum, linguistically sensitive teaching and multilingual pedagogy should be embraced by all teachers, not only language teachers. Despite the existing research and the amount of tools developed for individual teachers, it remains difficult to change monolingually-framed policies and practices in schools. Monolingual practices limit the linguistic repertoire to school-languages and exclude languages other than the ones in the school curriculum. In this context, diversity (both linguistic and cultural) is often seen as a threat or burden and not as a resource for learning and teaching. This reality suggests that despite the existing extensive research and resource availability, the monolingual mindset proves to be difficult to change. In this presentation, we will present the Erasmus+project LISTiac (Linguistically Sensitive Teaching in All Classrooms) which aims to bring a change into European education. It targets pre- and in-service teachers and teacher educators in the European Union and wants to provide them with a tool that helps develop their teacher cognition and practices. To do so, the LISTiac project intends to develop a well-informed and theoretically based reflection tool for (future) teachers that helps them become more linguistically sensitive in their beliefs, attitudes and practices. By designing an active participation experiment, the project will create opportunities for (future) teachers to reflect on and change their possible monolingual perspectives. Hence, pupils will benefit from a more linguistically sensitive learning and teaching and will rely on their multilingual resources.
