This paper examines the prolonged decline and eventual closure of the Birgittine monastery at Vadstena, Sweden, in the 16th century as well as the evacuation of the remaining nuns to its daughter foundation, Marienbrunn in Gdańsk, in the spring of 1596. The discussion builds on previous research and highlights possibilities for further studies on the Birgittine nuns and their relations during a time of great turbulence and change. Of particular interest are the Birgittines’ connections to the rulers of the early Vasa dynasty and the role of both monasteries in Jesuit efforts to reintroduce Catholicism in Northern Europe. When the Vadstena nuns arrived in Marienbrunn, the monastery was embroiled in a complex conflict involving the Protestant city council, Jesuit representatives seeking to gain control of the monastery, and internal struggles among the remaining nuns. The Swedish Birgittines are believed to have maintained a neutral position in this conflict. The circumstances and relationships between the nuns of the two monasteries are worth further exploration, as one monastery ceased to exist while the other survived.
