The Westermarck Society, now the main professional association of Finnish sociologists, was originally founded in 1940. The article describes the Society's development during its first period. From about 1950 it consciously adopted its present role as primarily a professional association, rather than an association of those inspired by Edward Westermarck's scientific legacy. It contributed to the general development of instutionalization of Sociology in Finland.
