This paper is based on a long-term case studyfocusing on students’ experiences of reform mathematics classrooms in Finland.More specifically, the focus of the paper is on emerging school mathematicalactions and activities experienced by three committed and engaged students. Thestudents expressed their experiences in interviews during and ten years afterlower secondary school. The paper attends to the question why taking part inits practices makes some students learn to like and others to dislike schoolmathematics, despite high attainment concerning reform-related objectives onachievement and responsibility. The study shows the importance of classroomswhere all students belong to communities where the mathematical knowledge isnegotiated.
