The catalytic activity of zirconia in the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and CO2 was studied. The thermodynamic properties of the reaction were estimated at different temperatures and pressures. Kinetic tests were carried out to determine the maximum yield and selectivity for DMC at different conditions. The limitations imposed by thermodynamics could be relaxed by using a chemical water trap to bind water produced during the reaction between methanol and CO2 thereby shifting the reaction equilibrium towards higher DMC yields. The catalytic performance improved significantly in the presence of strong basic sites incorporated into zirconia. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (Montreal, Quebec, Canada 8/23-27/2009).
