Paper machines are very complex production sys-tems, but their scope is simple: they consume materials and re-sources to produce high quality paper that is competitive for a dynamic, complex and very competitive global market. In this paper we sketch a decision support system developed in coopera-tion with an industrial partner to collect and use tacit knowledge for operating a paper machine. The knowledge of experienced engineers is represented with fuzzy ontology, which is the basis for a decision support system that could guide inexperienced engineers in the operation of paper machines. Recently there are new challenges as the industry started to meet the problems of big data.
