This case facilitates an exploration of planned obsolescence, its consequences, and potential solutions. Specifically, it highlights how both historical and contemporary practices contribute to excessive consumption by referencing the Phoebus cartel’s manipulation of lightbulb longevity in the early 20th century, and modern instances, such as the so-called batterygate scandal that affected Apple. The case also highlights the social and environmental ramifications of such practices, including the exploitation of garment workers and the vast amount of waste generated by disposed-of clothing.
