Abstrakti

This article departs from the question of whether the school subject mother tongue and literature (L1) in Finland is regarded as an art subject in previous research. The article presents a scoping review aimed at reviewing previous Finnish research that has examined art forms within the L1 subject during the 21st century. The review study investigates: (1) When, where, and in which languages has previous research on art forms in the L1 subject been published? (2) Which art forms and research interests within the subject have been studied in previous research? (3) Has previous research discussed the subject as an art subject, and if so, how? The review includes 60 studies, half of which were published in the 2020s. Interest in the subject’s art forms has thus increased, and fictive literature is—unsurprisingly—the most studied art form, both individually and in combination with other art forms (e.g., dance, film, drama, visual arts). The subject has been explicitly discussed as an art subject to a very limited extent, but due to fictive literature’s established position within the L1 subject, there is an underlying assumption in previous research about its character as an art subject. Based on the review results, the L1 subject thus appears to be an unarticulated art subject.
