Coating Layer Consolidation and the Influence of Drying Strategy - A Numerical Study

    Abstrakti

    The formation of consolidating paper coating microstructures was studied using a 3D numerical simulation technique. The concentration profile and small particle distributions of coating pigments were tracked in the z-direction as function of time and using realistic drying strategies. Systems investigated included coating layers of 10-30 { extmu}m post-metering thicknesses and particle size distributions corresponding to GCC. A 3D particle dynamics simulation technique based on modified Stokesian dynamics was used. This included hydrodynamics, colloidal interactions and Brownian motion, was used. The drying strategy influenced both, the coating layer structure formation and the distribution of particles. Filter cake formation and skinning was observed, but the latter only in thick coatings with intense drying. While the particle concentration gradients evened out, the redistribution of small particles persisted also after immobilisation. This study provides fundamental knowledge on the development of coating microstructures. The application of different drying strategies enables linking of post-application process parameters to their impact on coated paper properties.
