title = "Catalyst screening and reaction kinetics in the degradation of pharmaceuticals by ozonation",
abstract = "The pollution of various pharmaceuticals into the municipal wastewaters and to rivers, lakes and sea is a major increasing concern. Due to the large water amounts in urban areas, the technology for removing efficiently all the chemicals is limited and large quantities of human pharmaceuticals are passed through the waterer purification processes. Some of the most common pharmaceuticals were studied in a semibatch reactor where the ozone was ex-situ generated continuously, and the degradation of the drug was kinetically followed by continuous sampling, O3 quenching and HPLC analysis. The solubility of ozone as well as the degradation of pharmaceuticals was studied under various gas flow, stirring, temperature and pH conditions. An effort was put in the analysis of low-molecular weight degradation products to fully understand the reaction mechanisms of the degradation. Several catalysts screened, and the best candidates were studied for enhancing the degradation of several pharmaceuticals. The influence of the catalyst immobilization was also studied by applying a rotating bed reactor.",
