Abstrakti
Ina traditional learning setting the teacher often transmits the mathematicscurriculum according to what is said in a textbook and in a strict and ratherlearner-passive manner. During the last decades research has pointed outcontroversies in this approach to teaching and learning mathematics. In thepresent article the author discusses some of these controversies and introducesa different approach to teaching and learning mathematics, the active learningapproach. The active learning approach was used in a workshop at the ICEL2000called "Active learning of mathematics". The structure of thisworkshop is presented in the article.
