title = "A Prophet of the Postcolony: Babu wa Loliondo",
abstract = "This chapter examines the remarkable, albeit short-lived, ministry of Ambilikile Mwasapila, a retired Lutheran pastor popularly known as Babu wa Loliondo, who in 2011 attracted hundreds of thousands of people to the remote Tanzanian village of Samunge seeking a cure from a simple herbal remedy. The analysis frames this mass phenomenon within the theoretical concept of the postcolony, arguing that the event exposed deep-seated popular discontent with the prevailing political and social order. The author posits that the postcolonial state, despite formal independence, perpetuates the exploitative logic of its colonial predecessor, often concealed behind a fa{\c c}ade of democracy. In this context, marked by failing state services and a highly commercialised religious marketplace, Babu emerged as a {\textquoteleft}perfect prophet{\textquoteright}. His appeal was rooted in his perceived authenticity, symbolised by his modest lifestyle, remote location, and the non-commercial nature of his healing practice, which stood in stark contrast to the prevalent prosperity gospel and expensive traditional healers. The chapter argues that the mass pilgrimage to receive Babu{\textquoteright}s cup of medicine {\textendash} kikombe cha Babu (the Grandpa{\textquoteright}s cup) {\textendash} was more than a search for physical healing; it was a symbolic act of seeking an alternative to a corrupt and dysfunctional system. The phenomenon is interpreted as a momentary crack in the postcolonial fa{\c c}ade, revealing the population{\textquoteright}s profound longing for a moral and social order free from the logic of exploitation that defines the postcolony. By analysing the rise and fall of Babu{\textquoteright}s ministry, the chapter illuminates the tensions and desires simmering beneath the surface of the Tanzanian postcolony.",
