Integrated Energy Solutions to Green Shipping

Projektin tiedot

Smart and green is the megatrend of global shipping! The need to improve energy efficiency
and reduce emissions has been well understood by the marine industries. Especially, as world
trade is projected to grow significantly in the coming decades, emission reduction has been and
will be a big challenge to the marine industries. On the other hand, digitalization and automation
have already been shaping the future of marine shipping, which poses both challenges and
opportunities to the global marine cluster.
Taking both the challenges and opportunity, we, together with 19 leading Finnish marine
industry companies and research institutions, form this INTENS consortium aiming to develop
and utilize novel innovations and solutions to integrate and digitalize the Finnish marine cluster
and to deepen our scientific and practical know-how in smart and green shipping. Specifically,
the INTENS research project enables an RDI collaboration platform for efficient information
exchange, smooth technology transfer and close technical cooperation within the consortium
and supporting partners. Advanced data analytics, system integration and optimization methods
are employed to address the marine industries’ major challenges in digital transformation,
energy efficiency improvement and emission reduction.
Executed successfully, the INTENS projects will leap Digital Twin closer to reality in the marine
industries, showcase and further encourage the industry-wide collaboration and digital
transformation so as for the Finnish marine industries to be able to lead and hence largely enjoy
competitive advantages in future marine businesses globally. Eventually, we are able to make
global shipping more economic, energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
