Biografia

I have specialized in transnational and global history, including left internationalism, international communism, and anti-fascist movements in European and global contexts.

ONGOING & FORTHCOMING RESEARCH:

Since 1 September 2023 I am Academy Research Fellow at the University of Helsinki. For my latest research activities and publications, see: https://researchportal.helsinki.fi/en/persons/kasper-brasken

My latest projects have been funded by the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation (12 month research grant) to co-write a monograph with Nigel Copsey: Anti-Fascism: A Global History (Routledge, forthcoming). The book will offer a global analysis of key anti-fascist moments from the 1920s to the present day.

I am co-editor (with Elke Weesjes) of the forthcoming special issue: "Imagining the 20th Century Resistance Fighter: Intersectional perspectives on anti-fascist movements and commemorations” for the peer-reviewed journal: Twentieth Century Communism  (see CFP: <https://networks.h-net.org/node/11082568/pdf>).

I have from 2020 to 2023 participated in the research project "Finland-Swedish Antifascism" (Den finlandssvenska antifascismen) that analyses the history of anti-fascism in Finland from the 1920s to the 1940s. The project investigates how anti-fascism has functioned as a cohesive and dividing force in ethnic minorities. The project is headed by Docent Anders Ahlbäck and it was awarded 400.000 € by the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS) in November 2017. Within the project, I have worked on liberal and bourgeois anti-fascism among the Swedish-speaking Finns in Finland. In the project, I am co-editing (with Anders Ahlbäck) the anthology: Anti-fascism and Ethnic Minorities: History and Memory in Central and Eastern Europe (Routledge, 2024) which includes fourteen case studies on the relation between anti-fascist and ethnic identities in Central and Eastern Europe.

Published co-edited volumes/special issues include:

Special Issue of South African Historical Journal: Anti-Fascism in Southern Africa, vol. 74 (1) 2022.

Anti-Fascism in a Global Perspective: Transnational Networks, Exile Communities, and Radical Internationalism (Routledge, 2021)

Anti-Fascism in the Nordic Countries: New Perspectives, Comparisons and Transnational Connections (Routledge, 2019)

I am editorial board member of Twentieth Century Communism and the journal's book reviews editor.

I have peer-reviewed original research articles for the journals: Global Networks (Wiley), Contemporary European History (Cambridge UP), Scandinavian Journal of History (Routledge); and Fascism: Journal of Comparative Fascist Studies (Brill).

I am an active book reviewer and my reviews have been published in such journals as American Historical ReviewEuropean History Quarterly, History: The Journal of the Historical Association, Twentieth Century Communism, ConnectionsHistorisk Tidskrift för Finland, Finsk Tidskrift, International Newsletter of Communist Studies, and H-Net (H-Socialisms).

Teaching and Supervising

I am currently co-supervisor to two PhD-students who are investigating Nordic fascism and anti-fascism. My teaching has focused on 19th and 20th-century history, global and transnational history, the history of genocide and the Holocaust, fascism and anti-fascism, and the history of famine and famine relief.
