Building on previous research on Internet memes and re/decontextualization practices in digital environments, this paper examines a set of social media texts, some with multimodal elements, which are adaptations and iterations of an action film quote (i.e., “you merely adopted the dark, I was born in it, molded by it”). This line, uttered by the main villain character Bane in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), spawned what Zappavigna (2012: 106-108) refers to as a “phrasal template meme”, also referred to as a “snowclone” (Rintel 2013: 258): a meme that consists of a frame with customizable slots into which users can add their own elements, such that the structure remains the same (or similar) but the content changes. Our analysis focuses on how online users participate in appropriating, remixing and distributing this specific template to produce new meanings, leveraging intertextual knowledge, often from multiple sources, to create humour and/or commentaries on other topics.
