This paper addresses the role of the arts in L1 education. The multidisciplinary subject has a broad mission in school and its nature as an arts subject has tended to be overshadowed by, among other things, a strong focus on reading and writing skills (e.g., Green & Erixon, 2020). However, the critique of the imbalance between language and the arts in the L1 subject is not new (e.g., Russell, 1944), and has, to varying degrees, been a recurring discussion in the research field for several decades. The aim of this review study is to identify and synthesize previous research that include art forms in the L1 subject in Finland during the 21st century. The study is divided into two parts. First, we review previous literature on the arts in L1 education in Finland, building methodologically on a scoping review (Arksey & O’Malley, 2007; Grant & Booth, 2009). For example, the review attends to what art forms have been used, the studied educational contexts, and what are the empirical results of the studies. Second, the review intends to identify to what extent the L1 subject has, or has not, been discussed as an arts subject in previous research. As such, the study addresses the role and content of the arts in the L1 subject, discussing the results in relation to a broader international context. Preliminary results – quite unsurprisingly – indicate that literature, particularly fiction, holds the most prominent role in the L1 subject. At the end of the 2010’s, we can distinguish an increased use of combining the teaching of literature with other art forms, such as drama, dance, film, and visual arts. However, creative writing – in this review included as an art form – was surprisingly found in only a few studies. In the presentation, we discuss and problematize the findings on how the L1 subject can be understood and actualized as an arts subject.Aikajakso | 19 kesäk. 2024 |
