Abstract

While most closely related to physical chemistry, surface and colloid chemistry in a natural way bridges many different scientific disciplines. Its importance is accentuated by the development of the biosciences towards the molecular level and the need within industry to master complicated (hi-tech) processes and products. Since surface and colloid chemistry aims at investigating and controlling phenomena occurring at interfaces it assumes special importance when the interfaces are large, i.e. when the matter is finely dispersed. The division of the material may be in one, two or three dimensions, giving rise to lamellae or membranes, fibres, threads or gels and powders, emulstions or aerosols, respectively.
