    Abstract

The text compares the situation of the autonomous Finland in 1917 with the autonomous Catalonia in 2017 and makes the point that independence of Finland was not necessarily an inevitable end point of development of the position of Finland, but several other alternatives were on the table. As a consequence, there were persons in the Parliament of Finland who were hesitant about independence, as there were persons in Catalonia during the so-called referendum who were hesitant about independence and declined to vote or voted against independence.
