Abstract
Koch and Oesterreicher (2011) enumerate ten parameters in order to charac-
terize ‘language of immediacy’ on one hand, and ‘language of distance’ on
the other. These two main types of communicative behavior are then associ-
ated with certain linguistic features. Accordingly, Koch and Oesterreicher’s
parameters enable us to gradually qualify different types of communication
situations, which proves to be useful when investigating different text types.
In this article, we will analyze a genre combining immediacy and distance
parameters, namely letters written to legal advisors on the internet, and
describe the linguistic features that can be associated to the two dimensions respectively. A discussion of the particular nature of this corpus suggests
that Koch and Oesterreicher’s parameters are not able to characterize its
intermediate position between two different discourse traditions.
