Abstract
This article discusses the symbolic event on September 21, 1920, when Mussolini was publicly slapped by a worker in Pula, marking the first major act of resistance against fascism in Istria. Mussolini, visiting the region as the leader of the National Fascist Party, was humiliated by the act, which sparked violent retribution from local fascists. The event became a symbol of resistance against Italian fascism, as it highlighted the rejection of both ethnic assimilation and fascist ideology. This marked the beginning of Istria’s anti-fascist movement, which later culminated in the establishment of the Labin Republic and broader regional anti-fascist efforts.
