Abstract

The “The Differentiation of Political Participation” demonstrates a widening repertoire for political action and inaction. At the same time, the growing inequalities in society in general are directly reflected in political participation and its influence on decision-making processes. In essence, this volume invites the reader to consider how political participation could be made more accessible for citizens with different levels of sociopolitical resources. “The Differentiation of Political Participation” is the fourth volume in a regular series from the Finnish National Election Study (FNES). It is mainly based on a survey, collected after the 2015 Finnish parliamentary election. Published by the Ministry of Justice, it can also be downloaded at the website of the Election Study Consortium ( http://www.vaalitutkimus.fi/en/vaalitutkimuskonsortio. html). The website also contains information on the consortium and the election studies conducted after the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections. This volume is the main report of the academic research project in which the Ministry of Justice funded the data collection and editorial process. The Finnish Election Study Consortium is mainly organized among three universities. Its academic activities are led by a steering committee with four members: chair, Professor Kimmo Grönlund (Åbo Akademi University), director Sami Borg (the Finnish Social Science Data Archive), Adjunct Professor Åsa von Schoultz (Åbo Akademi University) and Academy Research Fellow, university lecturer Hanna Wass (University of Helsinki). The planning of the 2015 questionnaire was led by university lecturer Elina Kestilä-Kekkonen (University of Tampere). The other members of the planning committee were Adjunct Professor Kim Strandberg (Åbo Akademi University), doctoral candidate Aino Tiihonen (University of Tampere), researcher Jussi Westinen (Åbo Akademi University) and Hanna Wass. The management of the FNES2015 was located at the Åbo Akademi University, it was also responsible for the competitive bidding process among survey firms. The bid was ultimately won by TNS Gallup Oy, which conducted 1,587 face-to-face interviews among randomly selected enfranchised citizens from April 24 to July 7, 2015. Besides this volume, the data will be used in other scientific studies as well as a source for updating the Finnish Democracy Indicators. In addition to survey data, the analyses in this volume are based on individual-level register data on voting (compiled by the Statistics Finland for this study), official election statistics, additional survey data and data collected by the contributors. The Finnish National Election Study 2015 is the result of a close collaboration among 28 scholars. Its 21 chapters not only explore the election but also examine values and attitudes among voters, various forms of political engagement and the contemporary status of democracy in Finland. Several chapters also include comparisons to previous Finnish elections as well as other countries. The volume is edited by Kimmo Grönlund and Hanna Wass, assisted by Erkko Vanhakartano (Åbo Akademi University).
