Abstract

Substituting small amounts (2.5-15%) of higher field strength ions magnesium or zinc for calcium in Bioglass 45S5 causes a decrease in glass transition and an increase in crystallisation temperature, resulting in improved glass formation and processing even for low Mg or Zn concentrations. Substituted glasses may thus offer the benefit of improved sintering while providing therapeutic zinc or magnesium release at non-toxic levels.
