Abstract
The interaction between polymers in solution and colloidal particles is of great importance. For example biopolymers (proteins) frequently determine the properties of biological systems, steric stabilizers provide the freeze-thaw stability in paints and polyelectrolyte interactions make paper manufacturing and coating processes possible. Because of the occurrence of combined effects it is often difficult to distinguish the phenomena as such. Frequently, however, the properties of an actual system can be understood by applying the theories of how polymers affect colloidal stability. The aim of this paper is, with a few examples, to show how well-defined effects are reflected in practical situations.
