    Abstract

Smelt bed samples from kraft recovery boilers were taken and chem. anal. was made at different depths in the smelt bed.  Lab. measurements with synthetic salt mixts. were done as well as measurements of elec. cond. of Li2CO3 and Na2CO3 melting salt mixts.  The results show that sulfur, chlorine and potassium can enrich in the lowest layer of the smelt bed.  The change in compn. can lead to formation of molten phase at temps. near floor tube metal temps.  Already a small amt. of melt causes the elec. cond. to increase with several orders of magnitude.  Theor. calcns. support the exptl. findings.
