    Abstract

The PET radionuclide Cu-61 is accessible through several nuclear reactions. Besides the common production route via Ni-61(p,n)Cu-61 the Zn-64(p,alpha)Cu-61 reaction offers some advantages. Especially the comparatively cheap enriched Zn-64 makes this process economical. For fast product purification and recycling of target material an ion exchange cascade was developed. In addition a separation technique with a copper selective resin was tested. Cu-61 with specific activities up to 1000 GBq/mu mol was produced with these methods. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
