Abstract
This paper explains Groupe µ’s theory of the plastic sign, focusing on the definition of the system of form. The validity of the definition is evaluated with regard to some key distinctions in general semiotics and visual rhetoric. The distinction between iconic signs and plastic signs in pictures is thus explained with reference to the notion of semiotic form as distinct from plastic forms/shapes. The system of form as a taxonomy of position, dimension/size and orientation is described and some clarifications are suggested. Finally, rhetorical and pedagogical implications are discussed.
