Abstract
In addressing the challenges of climate change, it is crucial to develop effective strategies for implementing climate policies. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of gamification’s potential as a tool for fostering sustainable communities and achieving carbon-neutral cities. Based on state-of-the-art literature, it examines the impact of game apps and gamified places (Urban gamification) in tackling climate change. The article is structured in three main stages: an extensive literature review to pinpoint scholarly works relevant to gamification and carbon neutrality, an analytical synthesis to examine gamification’s impact on sustainable urban development, and a comparative analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of game apps and gamified places in promoting carbon-neutral cities. The article introduces gamification as a catalyst for building sustainable communities and advancing toward carbon-neutral cities. It highlights the need for empirical research and practical trials to choose the most suitable gamification approach, considering societal preferences, method legitimacy, and community acceptance.
