    Abstract

In this contribution we show that conducting polymers (CPs) can be electropolymerized in graphene oxide (GO) solutions without additional dopant. The GO solution has a large number of negatively charged oxygen-containing functional groups that can act as counter ions during electropolymerization.

We have investigated the electropolymerization of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), poly(pyrrole) (PPy), poly(aniline) (PANI) and poly(N-methylaniline) (PNMA). PEDOT and PPy were electropolymerized in GO solutions without the presence of additional dopants. PANI and PNMA were also successfully polymerized but in these cases HCl and HClO4 were added to the GO solutions resulting in the formation of a mixed material with the chloride and perchlorate ions acting as additional dopants. All films exhibited a good and reversible electroactivity. The reduction of GO to graphene in the PEDOT and PPy films were carried out with ascorbic acid, NaBH4 or electrochemically.

All CP films were characterized and the incorporation of GO was confirmed with cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman, FTIR and X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS). The EIS measurements were used to study how the presence of GO influenced the capacitance of the polymer films, which is an important property in supercapacitors and ion-selective electrode applications.
