    Abstract

Monolithic carbon possessing hierarchical, multimodal porosity has been prepared by nano-casting of monolithic, meso- and macroporous silica. The carbon monolith (right in Figure) is a positive replica of the silica monolith on the micrometer scale, but a negative replica on the nanometer scale. The diameter of the fully interconnected macropores can be varied between 0.5 and 30 mum and they co-exist with mesopores with diameters of 4-5 nm.
