Aphrahat's Use of Isaiah in Demonstrations: Two Case Studies

Research output: Chapter in Book/Conference proceeding › Chapter › Scientific › peer-review

Abstract

After an introduction to Aphrahat and the Peshitta of Isaiah, the article focusses on two primary passages, Isa 49:6 and 2:2–6 in Aphrahat's Demonstrations. Aphrahat interprets these verses to underscore early Syriac Christianity's stance on the divine law and its transmission to the nations, particularly through Christ, whom he sees as embodying the "light" for all peoples. Aphrahat positions Isaiah as a prophetic witness to the inclusion of gentiles in God's covenant, contrasting Israel's rejection of Christ with the gentiles' acceptance. Isaiah 49:6 highlights Christ's role in illuminating the nations, while Isa 2:2–6 signifies the "departure" of the Law from Zion, redirecting God's teachings to the gentiles. These interpretations emphasize a shift from the Jewish to the Christian community, where Aphrahat positions Israel as a rejected entity, yet he allows for the inclusion of Jews within the "people from the peoples" united under Christ.
