Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is experiencing a society-wide renaissance, driven by advances in deep learning, natural language processing, generative AI and explainable AI. AI solutions provide everyday services to the public in the form of recommendation systems, optimized social media content and search engines. It has been argued that ChatGPT, where natural language processing, generative AI and large databases are combined to provide a fascinating tool, painting a major change in the future working life, rendering a lot of repetitive jobs unnecessary.

This paper brings to the table the necessity for engineers to remain faithful to their profession and never abandon the practices that give engineering its value - the need for exploration, deep technological understanding, understanding of the big picture, and lately but not least, understanding the sustainability connected to engineering. This is done by reviewing a set of
past projects that have explored the usability of AI and ML as engineering tools, and collecting the learnings into guidelines for utilizing AI in engineering practices.h
