Abstract

This chapter presents a practical organizing framework for initiating, designing, and implementing performance-improving change in a business ecosystem. In essence, the framework provides the outlines of a macro practice for supra-organizational—multi-organizational or ecosystemic—strategizing. The framework is practically relevant because it has been developed, tested, and refined in an empirical case of ecosystem change in a short sea shipping ecosystem. Furthermore, the framework contributes to literature on strategy-as-practice, since such supra-organizational strategizing has not thus far been addressed in this body of knowledge. The framework is premised on an ecosystemic increase in value creation, equitable division of value capturing, and sustainability of organization-specific strategic positions.
