    Abstract

Specular gloss is widely utilized in the assessment of surface quality in the paper industry. It is defined ininternational standards as the ratio of light fluxes from the inspected surface and a reference surface. Themeasurement of minute changes in local gloss has not been presented in international standards due to the lackof suitable glossmeters. In this study local- and average gloss from papers and prints were measured using ahighly sensitive diffractive glossmeter. The information on local and global gloss helps papermakers in theirresearch and development of optimal paper surface quality, which is crucial in obtaining optimal print quality inthe printing process.
