Education for Health and Learning

The overall purpose of the research network EduWell is to explore, explain, compare and develop school health education in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland. Young people's mental health is a major societal challenge in
our time. The school has a central role in young people's lives and is an important place for their health, wellbeing and learning. The school's main mission is to ensure that students acquire and develop the knowledge
necessary for their personal and societal development. School health education is included in this mission but the concept of mental health, the factors that influence mental health and strategies to promote one's own wellbeing
should also be included. Physical and sexual health has been apart of health education a long time but mental health and wellbeing is still missing. Learning about mental health(health literacy)has been a demand by young
people for a long time. Increased knowledge and understanding of mental health is of central importance for students' health and wellbeing. Good examples of different aspects of health education can be found in Sweden,
Finland, Norway and Iceland. The intention is to, through an international research network, EduWell, create a collective knowledge base with interdisciplinary research about school health education.

Det övergripande syftet med forskningsnätverket EduWell är att utforska, förklara, jämföra och utveckla skolans hälsoundervisning i Sverige, Finland,Norge och Island. Ungdomars psykiska hälsa utgör en stor samhällsutmaning i vår tid. Skolan har en central roll i ungdomars liv och utgör en viktig plats för deras välbefinnande. Skolans huvudsakliga uppdrag är att säkerställa att eleverna förvärvar och utvecklar de kunskaper som är nödvändiga för deras personliga och samhälleliga utveckling. Skolans hälsoundervisning bör inkludera konceptet psykisk hälsa och de faktorer som påverkar välbefinnandet och strategier för att främja sitt eget välmående. Ungdomar har rätt till kunskap om sin egen hälsa och välbefinnande. Fysisk hälsa har varit en integrerad del av svensk skolundervisning sedan 1800-talet och sexuell hälsa sedan mitten av 1900-talet, finns det fortfarande brister när det gäller undervisningen om psykisk hälsa. Att lära sig om psykisk hälsa (health literacity) i skolan har efterfrågats av ungdomarnas under lång tid och även forskningen har klargjort att undervisning om psykisk hälsa måste prioriteras.

Ökad kunskap och förståelse för psykisk hälsa är av central betydelse för elevernas hälsa och lärande. Goda exempel på olika delar av hälsoundervisning finns i Sverige, Finland, Norge och Island. Intentionen är att genom ett internationellt forskarnätverk EduWell skapa en samlad kunskapsbas med tvärvetenskaplig forskning om skolans hälsoundervisning.
