Biography

Tero Heinonen is a doctoral researcher in the Study of Religions at Åbo Akademi University. His ethnographic dissertation examines how religious traditions and social interaction shape experiences of connection with others and with a higher power through devotional music making. In particular, the research explores how culturally learned religious roles and collective emotions generated through embodied forms of music making contribute to religious experiences. The research draws on role theory of religion and interaction ritual theory. His research interests include the sociology and psychology of religious experience and emotion, musical and embodied interaction, and the study of contemporary spirituality and Indian guru movements. The research has been funded by the Donner Institute for Research into Religion and Culture, Graduate School at Åbo Akademi University, and the Society for Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS).
