Silja Laine holds a PhD in Cultural History and a title of Docent in Urban Cultural History at the University of Turku. Her research fields cover urban history, literature and environmental humanities. In her current project “Public Transport as Public Space in European Cities: Narrating, Experiencing, Contesting” (PUTSPACE), funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 HERA joint research programme “Public Spaces: Culture and Integration in Europe (2019–22). she focuses on urban mobility, public space, urban memory and visual studies.

She is also affiliated with a Finnish Academy funded project SEAHER - Living with the Baltic Sea in a Changing Climate. Environmental Heritage and the Circulation of Knowledge 2018–2022 coordinated at the Department of Public Administration at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Economics / Åbo Akademi University. a research project Ilmastonmuutosta koskeva tieto ja Itämeri funded by Tiina ja Antti Herlinin säätiö 2018-2021 In these projects, she is interested in the cultural history of seasons.
