My philosophical roots lie deep in the fertile soil of the philosophy of the later Wittgenstein, although today, I am more interested in using it as a seedbed than in digging deeper into it.In my doctoral dissertation, I propose a radically new approach to the debate about the normativity of meaning. I argue that a central premise of the debate, namely the general distinction between intrinsically and extrinsically normative considerations, is much more problematic than currently acknowledged. Building on Wilfrid Sellars’s and Robert Brandom’s ideas on the justification of action and inference, I argue that the normative force that claims about meanings of linguistic expressions have varies between particular justificatory contexts. This entails the question about the normativity of meaning has neither a categorically positive or a categorically negative answer. My main PhD supervisor is Martin Gustafsson. I am grateful for having received funding for my PhD research from several sources including Kauhajoen kultturirahasto, TOP-säätiö, Stiftelsen för Åbo Akademi and the Kone foundation.

I am a PhD student in the department of philosophy at the Åbo Akademi University. I specialize in the philosophy of language and the philosophy of action. The topic of my PhD dissertation is the debate about the normativity of meaning. I took my master’s degree at the University of Jyväskylä in 2013, writing my master’s thesis on the concept of understanding in the philosophy of the later Wittgenstein.I am the student representative of the Åbo Akademi University at the Finnish doctoral training network in philosophy.
