Personal profile

Mahlet Tamirat is a doctoral candidate at the Structural Bioinformatics Laboratory in Åbo Akademi University. She received her bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from Addis Ababa University and her master’s degree in Bioinformatics form the University of Turku. She is currently conducting research in the area of computational structural biology, examining molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids.

Her research mainly focuses on analysing the dynamic structural changes several oncogenic mutations exert on the ERBB tyrosine kinase proteins (EGFR, ErbB2, ErbB3 and ErbB4). In these studies, she aims to pinpoint the mechanisms by which the mutations alter kinase activity, leading to the development of various human cancers, most notably non-small cell lung cancer. Mahlet also works in the field of computer-aided drug design with the objective of identifying hit compounds that could have functional impacts against selected biological targets. In her research she employs techniques such as homology modeling, docking, virtual screening and molecular dynamics simulation. During her doctoral studies Mahlet has published 7 peer-reviewed publications.

In her spare time, Mahlet enjoys hiking and photography.
